Weigela florida ‘Foliis Purpureis’

This is an easily grown shrub, thriving in sun and most soils. It happily provides masses of pink blooms in spring. Weigela florida ‘Foliis Purpureis’ is a very hardy, deciduous shrub growing to a neat 1m. Rather than being considered a hybrid, This is one of the few Weigela cultivars still recognized as W. florida. It is a bit more compact than most weigelas, with strongly purple tinged foliage.


Growing: Weigela florida ‘Foliis Purpureis’

– Height with flowers: 100cm approx.
– Width: 80cm approx.
– Position: Ideally Full Sun to Partial Shade, although it will tolerate a range of positions given it gets at least 4-6 hours of sunlight a day.
– Soil: Plant in a well-drained fertile soil, it is tolerant of a range of soils but does not like to completely dry out to often.

– Growth: Deciduous shrub.
– Attracts: Bees and all types of beneficial pollinators.

Tough & tolerant

– Care: An easy care and low maintenance plant. It will benefit from a prune when fully deciduous in winter, in addition will enjoy a fertilise in early spring, but if the soils rich it will thrive either way.
– Deer & Rabbit resistant: Relatively resistant as these nibbling pests prefer lush green foliage. Because it does have deciduous foliage, even if it does get some damage, it will lose and regenerate its leaves either way.
– Origin: Weigela florida is a shrub native to northern China, Korea, and Japan.
