This is a popular perennial that is useful for difficult, dry and arid spots of the garden as it will tolerate prolonged drought, although it flourishes with regular watering.
Growing: Tulbaghia violacea ‘Glenside’
– Height with flowers: 30cm approx.

– Position: Full Sun as well as Partial Shade.
– Soil: Grows very easily in most soils but must be well drained.
– Fragrance: Similar to garlic chives (not the anti-social odour of garlic)
– Frost: Hardy down to -10C
– Growth: Perennial Bulb
– Attracts: They attract a wide range of native bees, as well as nectar-feeding birds and other beneficial pollinators.
– Care: This plant requires next to no work, Can dead head flower stems when spent if desired but isn’t necessary.
– Deer & Rabbit resistant: Both steer clear of this plant because the aroma is unpleasant to these pests.
– Origin: Native to South Africa.
– History: Tulbaghia’s named after Ryk Tulbagh (died 1771), governor of the Cape of Good Hope, and violacea means violet-coloured.
