Saxifraga stolonifera ‘Tricolor’

Red, cream & silver blooms on strong stems to 30cm. Makes a thick foliage groundcover mat in Deep Shade. Saxifraga stolonifera ‘Tricolor’ is frost hardy and enjoys a position in Deep Shade or can also grow in Dappled Sunlight. Lovely in a pot or hanging basket as it will trail down with long tendrils. A great addition to a fern area or any well shaded spot.

Common name confusion

Saxifraga goes by many common names given to it by gardeners over the years. These include; Roving sailor, Aaron’s beard, Mother of thousands (this is also given to Kalanchoe), creeping saxifrage, Strawberry saxifrage, Strawberry geranium..
Despite some of these common names, the plant isn’t actually a geranium, begonia, or strawberry plant. It belongs to the Saxifragaceae family.

– Position: Deep Shade and also Dappled Light.
– Soil: Will tolerate a range of soils but must be well drained. Additionally it doesn’t like to dry out completely for long periods.

– Origin: It is native to China, Japan as well as Korea, where it is used for cooking. It was previously believed to be native to Western Europe because it’s so widespread. Also has naturalised in many temperate regions of Eurasia and North America.
