Disporum cantoniense ‘Night Heron’

Dark chocolate-purple stems that rise gracefully from the soil in spring. Dainty cream bell flowers followed by showy, purple black berries. Growth to 1.5m making a spectacular show in Deep-1/2 Shade. Disporum cantoniense ‘Night Heron’ plants will slowly spread over time by rhizomes to form colonies, but are not considered to be invasive.

Shiny new dusky-purple leaves on gently arching side shoots give an exotic bamboo-like effect.


Growing: Disporum cantoniense ‘Night Heron’

– Height with flowers: 150cm approx.
– Width: 100cm approx.
– Position: Performs well in a woodland setting, dappled sun or deep shade position.
– Soil: Best grown in a humus rich soil with some moisture but will tolerate a range of soils.

– Beneficial for wildlife: The blossoms attract bees and also other pollinators.
– Care: Best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season, In turn, simply cut it back to ground level in late winter, this way the new foliage and stems stand out and the plant looks fresh. 
– Deer & Rabbit resistant: Disporum is not first choice for such pests because they don’t like the texture.
– Origin: As the name hints, this cultivar originated at Heronswood Nursery of Kingston.
