Description

Coreopsis ‘Limerock Ruby’

Coreopsis ‘Limerock Ruby’ turns itself into a gem, covered with ruby stars.
And it is hard to fit a pin between all the flowers, for months on end over summer and autumn.
Excellent for edging the border, and especially superb in tubs or mixed containers because of the rich colour.

A machine for ruby production

As the plant is naturally neat and compact, it turns into a mound of ruby colour all over the warm months.
The only difficulty is deciding when you can bear to cut off all those flowers, and give it a haircut.
But not to worry – it will be back in massed bloom very quickly, and all the better for the trim.
‘Limerock Ruby’ also has the advantage of “self cleaning” flowers (they drop off when they finish). But it still pays to trim occasionally.

Water-wise & drought resistant

Coreopsis ‘Limerock Ruby’ thrives in heat, and is drought tolerant once established.
It is ideal for water-wise gardeners.

Growing: Coreopsis ‘Limerock Ruby’

Height with flowers: A neat bushy, cushion of flowers to 50cm. approx
Width: Coreopsis ‘Limerock Ruby’ makes a round, pudding shape as wide as it is high, so to a diameter of approx. 50cm.
Position: Sun. Coreopsis like to bask in the sun and feel the breeze through their massed flowers. Though they can tolerate a little shade as long as they are well aired.
Very suitable for seaside gardens and hot, dry districts.

Treat them lean & mean

Soil: Coreopsis are not fussy about soil type, but they do insist on good drainage.
So they will thrive in poorer soils with low fertility. And they particularly enjoy sandy, rocky, or gravel soils, to average garden loam. However they will rot in heavy soil.
They can also tolerate a wide range of soil pH on either the acid or alkaline (lime) side of neutral, and they are actually very tolerant of limestone soils.
Perform best when grown lean and mean.
Water-wise: Coreopsis are water-wise plants, so normal, average garden water is more than enough. They revel in heat, and can easily withstand periods of dry between drinks.
They are drought resistant plants.
Care: Cut back by 1/3 mid-summer, whenever you can harden your heart enough to cut off all those flowers. But fear not – the haircut will quickly promote even more flowers. And extend the flowering season even longer. Plus prevent it from flowering itself to death!
A little fertilizer with the haircut will keep its flowering spirits up, but do not over fertilize.
They are better grown lean, and then they flower even more profusely.

Other benefits

Frost: Can tolerate light frost down to approx. -5C, but will require some overhead shelter, perhaps from a nearby taller shrub or wall, in areas with severe frosts.
Growth: An evergreen, perennial mound. Cant be beaten for profuse and long flowering.
Beneficial for wildlife: Bees gather both nectar and pollen from the prolific star flowers.
And butterflies gain energy with all the nectar.
There are so many flowers, for so long, our pollinating friends regard a Coreopsis plant as one big smorgasbord.
Deer & Rabbit resistant: Though Coreopsis are not completely immune to our grazing foes, they do not appear to place them high on their menu.
Origin: Coreopsis ‘Limerock Ruby’ is a a recently bred hybrid.
However it derives from original wild plants that are native to hot and dry regions of Mexico and the west of U.S.A. Which of course accounts for its well deserved reputation for hardiness in heat, drought, and poor soils.
